Culture & History

Dubrovnik is an immaculately preserved 13th century fortified city with Renaissance towers, churches and harbor. And Hvar boasts the country's oldest public theater - dating from 1612. And there are the beautiful churches; the basilica of Euphrasius in Porec, the pre-Romanesque church of St Donat in Zadar, Sibenik cathedral, and many others.

In addition to the splendid scenery and cultural sites, you'll be witness to some of the great history of the world. For centuries the Adriatic has been a thriving trade route. The east coast was inhabited in the early Stone Age.

Thanks to the area's numerous bays, inlets and coves, it became a significant mercantile and nautical route over the centuries. The Romans came and built palaces and summer residences here.

In the late 18th and early 19th century, Napoleon ruled for a short period of time, after which he was replaced by the Austrian monarchy. Ports were built and fortified, trade and shipbuilding flourished. During the two World Wars, the Adriatic again saw conflict, and there are many shipwrecks dating from all these periods.

The principal red grape of the region is the Plavac Mali, used to make Dingac and Postup, strong sweetish wines from the Peljesac Peninsula north of Dubrovnik. Prosek is also made from Plavac Mali.
