Cruise the Greek Islands
Greece offers the comforts of modern Europe in close proximity to the stark beauty of the ancient world. Reminders of the country's past glory abound all over Greece - from Athens' Parthenon and Delphi's Temple of Apollo to the ruins of the Minóan city of Knossós and Olympia, Epidaurus, Vergina and Akrotiri.
Of all the ancient sites in Greece, Delphi is perhaps the fairest of them all. Built on the slopes of Mt Parnassos, overlooking the Gulf of Corinth and extending into a valley of cypress and olive trees, this site is alluring both in its stunning setting and its inspiring ruins. Ancient Delphi managed to amass a considerable treasure-trove, and this is reflected in its magnificent Archaeological Museum.
History & Culture
The cultural background of Greece is sprinkled across the landscape with ruins spanning some 6,000 years. The country’s location at the crossroads between east and west has left an indelible mark on its cultural heritage. Ancient sites abound, and numerous city museums protect priceless artifacts of antiquity.
Food & Drink
Another important facet to this wonderful land - many would say the best - is the food. Greek food comes in many shapes, forms, and varieties to keep even the most demanding traveler satisfied.
Many restaurants or tavernas are going to be "touristy." But more than likely you will find the food quality and service to be exceptional - and the place itself clean and friendly. A bit of further wandering along the narrow streets of most cities will reveal places the locals frequent. Here the visitor is often rewarded with a restaurant offering great Greek food at reasonable prices in an authentic local atmosphere.
Most everything on any Greek taverna menu is straight forward. You may choose from a great variety of Greek delicacies like Pasticcio, Mousaka, or giuvetsi, or from a variety of pasta dishes.
And then there’s the atmosphere. Most tavernas (especially the ones the locals frequent) are most festive into the wee hours of the morning with conversations often relegating the pulsing Greek music to a background role, with children running everywhere, small cats scurrying under tables in search of scraps, and beer, wine and grappa flowing happily. Greeks don't wait for the weekend to go out, and after a good meal they enjoy a few more hours of conversation and drinks at the table. And there is no closing hour established for restaurants, bars, cafeterias and night clubs.
Rest & Relaxation
But most loved by travelers are the extensive sunshine and the ocean's unlimited hues of blue. Scattered throughout the calm blue waters of the Aegean are Greece's 1,400 islands.
The serenity of the Dodecanese islands offers a great contrast to many of the well-known tourist islands of Mykonos, Santorini, Milos and Hydra.
